Travel Throwback: Montréal, QC

An evening was spent in Montréal this past summer en route to Rivière du Loup. We entrusted Yelp with our sole meal in Montreal and it did not disappoint.

Bienvenu au Kazu!

Japanese cuisine may not be your first thought when considering what to eat in Montréal, but considering it's 4.5 star review on Yelp and the prospect of not eating real Asian food for five week, Kazu was an easy pick.

When we arrived, just short of 6 pm there was a small line; not far past the door.

Whenever a waitress could come to check on the line, they would pass around a copy of the menu so you can decide what you want so when you're seated they can immediately take your order. It's quite a fast-paced environment; small, crowded, but warm and the smells are just phenomenal.

The menu is quite limited, but at the same time, you know it's very specialized. Everything on the menu is almost guaranteed to be delicious; from their gyoza down to their house-made ice creams.

And here is the line, shortly after we were seated.

Time to get down to the food!

Half the table ordered the 40-Hour Pork Bowl; slow cooked pork and onions (for forty hours, presumably) over rice and topped with a bit of pickled radish and green onions. SO much flavour in this rather simple looking dish. I tried very hard to not scarf this all down in a matter of minutes. I could probably eat a second bowl of this and the portion was already quite large.

And here, we have the Tuna and Salmon Salad Bowl. If i'm not mistaken (I didn't order this) it's a bed of romaine, with slices of salmon and tuna sashimi in a light vinaigrette and this pile of crispy noodles. From what I tasted, I feel like it was unecessarity oily without that much flavor, but there were no complaints from those who ordered it so maybe I just had a bad bite.

Kazu is a great place with good sized portions. If I lived in Montreal, I'd be all over trying their ramen. Well, ce n'est pas un au revoir Montréal, mais seulement un à bientot!
